“Transforming Our Words: Words That Build, Not Break”
READ TOGETHER: Proverbs 15:1–9 (NIV)
1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.2 The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.3 The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.4 The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.5 A fool spurns a parent’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.6 The house of the righteous contains great treasure, but the income of the wicked brings ruin.7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge, not so the hearts of fools.8 The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him.9 The Lord detests the way of the wicked, but he loves those who pursue righteousness.
The entire section is about the way of the Lord… and it’s all about our tongues. How important it is to speak life and to speak love and to edify, and to lift up and to speak good. And anything other than that, the Lord says is wickedness. It says that the Lord has his eyes on us at all times and the good and the bad. And this verse calls the way many of us speak “wicked.” I’m guilty.
VERSE-BY-VERSE REFLECTION
A gentle answer turns away wrath…
· Discussion: When has someone’s gentle answer de-escalated your anger? When have your own harsh words made things worse?
· Application: Practice a 3-second pause before replying when emotions are triggered.
The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge…
· Insight: Wise words don’t just express truth—they beautify it.
· Practice: Have each person write one “adorned” statement—a way to encourage someone using Scripture or thoughtful praise.
The eyes of the Lord are everywhere…
· Reminder: God hears the whispers, the sighs, the sarcasm under our breath.
· Reflection: What would you change about your speech if you were always aware of God’s presence in the room?
A soothing tongue is a tree of life…
· Heart Check: Are my words watering life or stripping leaves off the people around me?
· Exercise: Speak a "tree of life" affirmation to someone in the room.
A fool spurns a parent’s discipline…
· Link: Rebellion and unteachable spirits often produce reckless, hurtful speech.
· Mentor Prompt: Share a time when receiving correction changed your way of speaking.
The house of the righteous contains great treasure…
· Note: Righteousness, not riches, builds a home. Speech plays a role in that.
· Group Question: What kind of “treasure” do your words deposit into your home?
The lips of the wise spread knowledge…
· Exercise: Role-play giving a hard truth in a way that spreads knowledge—not shame.
The Lord detests… but delights in…
· Heart Truth: Speech reflects the way we walk. Are we speaking in alignment with God's delight?

Biblical Wisdom for Speak-Life Living
1. Speech reflects your heart (Matthew 12:34, 15:18): speech reveals internal character.
2. Words carry eternal weight (Matthew 12:36–37): nothing we say is without consequence.
3. Aim to edify (Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 4:6): words should build, encourage, and share grace.
4. Control your tongue (James 1:26; Psalms): disciplined speech indicates maturity.
5. Speak life and healing (Proverbs): choose gentle, wise expressions that give life.
Why Is the Tongue So Hard to Tame?
· Modeled behavior: We imitate family norms, social cues, or cultural sarcasm.
· Inner wounds: Hurt people hurt people. Unhealed pain leaks out through words.
· Control & pride: We use words to assert power or superiority.
· Neglect of the heart: We focus on behavior, not inner transformation (Matthew 15:18).
“Death by 1,000 Cuts” in Relationships
· Sarcasm, sighs, dismissive tone — they seem small, but repeated over time, they damage trust and intimacy.
· Facial expressions, passive aggression, muttered comments — all communicate contempt or disconnection.
Challenge: Ask, “If someone treated me the way I’m speaking to them, how would I feel?”
Transformation: Speaking Life Instead of Death
Heart Reset Practices
1. Morning Mouth Prayer: Psalm 141:3 — “Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord…”
2. Tongue Tally Sheet: Keep a small notepad. Tally every time you speak in irritation, sarcasm, or impatience.
3. Fast From Negativity: Go 24 hours without any negative, critical, or sarcastic statements.
Thrive Exercises
· Speak a Blessing: Begin each day speaking a spoken blessing over someone—kids, spouse, friend, coworker.
· Memory Verse Anchor: Choose one "life-giving" speech verse (e.g., Proverbs 15:4) and say it aloud morning and night.
· Silence for Discernment: Practice saying nothing for a full minute when tempted to react. Then ask: “Will this build up or break down?”
Wrap-Up Reflection
· Ask: What is one way I will change how I speak this week?
· Encourage: Speak a prayer of release over the group—releasing past hurts caused by words, and inviting God to renew their speech.
· REMEMBER… ITS PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION
