Learning about Core Trauma can be critical in our mental health. It does little good to identify those areas where we struggle. Standing in front of a room declaring our past sins may be a a staple of 12 step recovery but once we have admitted and confessed those areas we have struggled in we must move on to declaring our identity is not associated with those struggles. Instead, our identity lies In Christ. We are sons of the Father. We are chosen, loved, highly favored, protected and accepted. We are God's special creation. We are set apart and precious to God and He has a plan for our lives.
Thrive stresses the importance of accepting our true identity and not holding to an identity of sin behavior. But it is important to recognize that we have fallen short and that we continue to fall short in many areas of our lives. Identifying our Core Traumas is critical in leaning why we fall short. Our core traumas are not the things we have done. Core Traumas are all the things of our past that have happened to us that have wounded us and shaped our survival story.
A survival story removes the shame of sin behavior. Shame is something God says we were never meant to feel or carry. But identifying (as 12 step promotes) with sin behavior not only serves to remind us of the past, it also re-establishes the shame of our past mistakes. We must move away from this shame model.
These worksheets will help you to determine your Core Traumas.
